Managing Disappointment and Building Team Commitment in Hospitality

THE IDEA

When disappointment or broken trust affects your hotel team, acknowledge the emotions involved, identify unmet needs and decide whether a conversation is worthwhile. Clear expectations, healthy boundaries, open feedback and a coaching-led approach can help hospitality leaders rebuild trust, strengthen engagement and move forward.

Disappointment and lack of commitment are inherent challenges in team management, especially in an environment as dynamic and demanding as hospitality. In every interaction, every unfulfilled promise or every misunderstanding, we are presented with an opportunity to learn and reinforce our values of communication and empathy. Given the fast pace of our day-to-day work and the high levels of stress we face, it is essential that we learn to manage our own emotions so that we can guide our teams towards positive results.

Over the years, I have seen that in the hotel sector, the key to overcoming these obstacles lies in cultivating an environment of transparency, where both recognition and constructive feedback are part of everyday life. Adopting the mindset of a coach—rather than simply that of a manager—has enabled me not only to enhance my team’s skills, but also to strengthen trust and mutual commitment. This approach is based on the premise that every employee has potential which, when properly channelled, can reach extraordinary levels of performance.
