Employee motivation in the hotel industry raises important ethical questions. Fear-based management is often ineffective, while intrinsic and ethical approaches can foster deeper engagement.

One of the priorities of hotel owners and managers has always been to find the best way to motivate employees, developing different motivation philosophies based on rewards and punishments or inspiring employees to do more through other means. All workplace motivation philosophies raise ethical questions that most owners, managers and Human Resources professionals rarely consider in depth.
Some hotels use an authority-based management style to discipline, dismiss or reward employees according to their productivity and workplace behaviour.
