Opening a Hotel Is More Than a Launch: Building Culture from Day One

THE IDEA

Leading a hotel opening means defining its character from day one. It is not simply about getting the operation up and running, but about setting clear expectations, consistent service standards and a culture that guides the team when leadership is no longer involved in every decision. A well-opened hotel is not one that merely launches, but one that operates with purpose, cares for its guests and remains sustainable over time.

Creating a hotel from scratch is one of the most demanding—and honest—experiences I have had in Hospitality. There is no momentum, no “this is how it has always been done”, no inherited excuses. Just an empty space, an idea yet to be defined, and the responsibility to turn a project into a hotel that works, cares and has soul from day one.

When you lead an opening, you quickly understand that standards are not written: they are put into practice. You can have impeccable manuals, but if you are not present for every key decision—in every operational detail, every uncomfortable conversation, every last-minute adjustment—those standards remain on paper. And a hotel is not brought to life with paper; it is brought to life with sound judgement.
