The Cost of Looking the Other Way

Most of us do not actively promote hatred or violence, oppress others, or make any particular contribution to making this world a worse place. But it is true that, all too often, we choose to wear blindfolds. We do not make life difficult for ourselves, and everything we are and have is the result of our own actions; the more we are and have, the greater our responsibility.
We can choose not to get involved in making the world a better place; this is an option we have, and we decide one way or another. We can take advantage of all the good things within our reach and that of our business, regardless of the consequences. We can act as though the planet and the global economy were not matters that concern us. We can simply look the other way and leave the burden to the next generation.
But when we make those decisions, we do violence to the future.
The alternative is to have the courage to accept a more difficult reality: the only way we can protect what we love is by actively seeking a stable, fair and sustainable world. Every action has a consequence. Every inaction perhaps even more so.
