Excellence in Hospitality Is a Habit, Not a One-Time Act

THE IDEA

In hospitality, excellence is built through the small, consistent actions that shape every guest interaction—from a warm welcome at reception to flawless breakfast presentation. Creating a culture where excellence is the standard requires clear service standards, continuous training and unwavering attention to detail. What a hotel does every day ultimately defines both its identity and the guest experience people remember.

In hospitality, excellence is not achieved through a stroke of luck or a single great idea. It is built day by day through the small yet consistent actions that define our operation. From greeting a guest to the way we resolve a setback, every gesture matters and, more importantly, is repeated. Because hospitality excellence is not an isolated event; it is a habit. Aristotle’s phrase reminds me that a hotel’s success depends not only on brilliant moments, but on the sum of exceptional habits that sustain it. But how are these habits built? In an industry where everything is constantly evolving, from technology trends to guest expectations, maintaining consistency can seem like a colossal challenge. Yet it is possible. The key lies in developing an organisational culture where excellence is the norm rather than the exception. “It is not enough to want to be excellent; we must practise excellence until it becomes part of our DNA,” I often reflect. And this applies not only to the team, but also to process design, leadership and the way we manage the guest experience. It is a virtuous cycle: what we do repeatedly defines who we are and, more importantly, how our guests perceive us. Hospitality excellence does not happen by accident. It is the result of a strategic approach based on the conscious repetition of best practices. Here, I share the pillars I consider essential for making excellence a habit within any hotel operation:

1. An organisational culture built on excellence

It all begins with a strong culture that values and promotes quality in every detail. This is achieved through:

      • Defining clear standards: From room cleanliness to the tone of the welcome at reception, everything must be standardised and documented.
      • Engaging the team in the hotel’s mission: Excellence becomes contagious when everyone understands why it matters and how they contribute to it.
      • Recognising and rewarding ongoing effort: Celebrate those who embody the values of excellence. This not only inspires others, but also reinforces the habit.

According to a Gallup study, employees who feel valued are 21% more productive and three times more engaged with company goals.
