The Hotel Industry: Leader or Laggard?

THE IDEA

Discover why the hotel industry leads in guest experience, innovation and sustainability while still facing challenges in internal process digitalisation, online competition and talent retention.

I cannot help but marvel at the diversity and constant dynamism of this industry. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work with numerous golf hotels and resorts, and this experience has led me to reflect on the position of the hotel sector in relation to other economic sectors. In this article, we will explore in depth why the hotel sector is at the forefront in certain respects and, at the same time, where it still faces significant challenges that place it at a disadvantage.

What Places Us at the Forefront

1. Guest Experience

The hotel sector has historically excelled at creating memorable guest experiences. From arrival at the hotel through to check-out, particular emphasis is placed on delivering exceptional, personalised service. This includes elements such as the welcome, room service, the quality of food and amenities, and attention to detail. Hotels understand that guest satisfaction is fundamental to long-term success and have therefore led the way in this area.

2. Innovation and Technology

The hotel sector has proactively embraced innovation and technology. From implementing online booking systems to introducing mobile applications that allow guests to manage their stay, hotels have been at the forefront of adopting technological solutions that enhance the guest experience. This includes the use of artificial intelligence to personalise services and manage demand efficiently, as well as the implementation of sustainable energy systems and eco-friendly solutions.

3. Diversity and Culture

The hotel sector is inherently diverse and multicultural. Hotels are international destinations that attract guests from around the world. This has fostered the creation of diverse, multilingual teams, contributing to a culture of inclusion and respect for differences. At a time when diversity and inclusion are increasingly valued in business, hotels have been ahead of the curve in this area.

4. Social Responsibility and Sustainability

The hotel sector has taken significant steps in terms of social responsibility and sustainability. Many hotels have implemented programmes to reduce waste, conserve energy and use water responsibly. In addition, they have participated in initiatives to support local communities and promote culture and sustainable tourism. This social awareness has set an example for other sectors that are now striving to follow suit.

Where We Still Lag Behind

1. Digitalisation of Internal Processes

Despite being at the forefront of adopting guest-centric technologies, the hotel sector often lags behind in the digitalisation of its internal processes. Supply chain management, accounting and human resources management are areas that often rely on outdated systems and manual processes. Adopting more advanced business management technologies could significantly improve operational efficiency.

2. Online Competition

The rise of online booking platforms and increasing competition in the digital space have posed challenges to hotel profitability. Constant pressure to offer lower rates through these platforms can affect profit margins. Hotels must find effective strategies to compete online and maintain profitability without compromising service quality.

3. Adapting to New Trends

The hotel industry sometimes lags behind in adopting new trends. For example, the shift towards the sharing economy has created new competitors in the form of vacation rentals. Hotels must adapt to these changing dynamics and find ways to differentiate themselves and remain relevant.

4. The War for Talent

Attracting and retaining talent is a constant challenge in the hotel sector. Despite being known for its diverse and multicultural culture, high staff turnover remains a persistent issue. Hotels must address this problem to maintain service quality and foster the professional development of their employees. The hotel sector stands out in areas such as the guest experience, innovation, diversity and sustainability. However, it faces challenges in the digitalisation of internal processes, online competition, adapting to new trends and the war for talent. By addressing these challenges, the hotel sector can continue to lead the way in the global industry and maintain its status as one of the main driving forces of the global economy.
