Strategic Approaches to Hospitality Excellence

Albert BarraApril 3, 2024 · 3 min read
In the fast-paced hospitality industry, a strategic approach is essential to staying relevant and standing out in an increasingly competitive market. As industry leaders, we must be visionary, innovative and future-focused—continually finding new ways to exceed guest expectations and secure long-term business success.

In today’s competitive business world, a company’s path to success or failure depends largely on the approach it adopts. There are three main approaches that companies typically follow: “improvising,” being purely tactical, or taking a strategic approach.
Improvising, while it may work in specific, short-term situations, is a risky approach over the long term. In the hospitality industry, where planning and anticipation are essential, improvising can lead to inconsistent results and a lack of cohesion in the guest experience. It is like trying to build a house without an architectural plan: you may encounter structural issues further down the line.
On the other hand, being purely tactical means reacting to challenges and opportunities as they arise, without a long-term vision. While this approach may offer quick solutions, it risks failing to address underlying issues or losing sight of long-term objectives. In hospitality, where competition is fierce and guest expectations are constantly evolving, being purely tactical can result in a lack of differentiation and a loss of market relevance.
Finally, the strategic approach is the path to excellence and long-term sustainability. A visionary leader in the hospitality industry understands the importance of setting clear objectives, analysing the competitive landscape and continually adapting to market trends. This approach not only involves anticipating guest needs, but also leading through innovation and creativity to deliver memorable experiences that exceed guest expectations.
In hospitality, adopting a strategic approach involves:
- Market analysis: Continually assessing market trends, identifying new opportunities and threats, and adjusting strategies accordingly. According to a report by the World Tourism Organization, international tourist arrivals are expected to grow by 3–4% annually through 2030, representing a significant growth opportunity for the hospitality sector.
- Continuous innovation: Constantly seeking new ways to enhance the guest experience, whether through cutting-edge technology, innovative loyalty programmes or creative space design. According to a Skift survey, 68% of business travellers and 58% of leisure travellers are willing to pay more for an enhanced travel experience.
- Talent development: Investing in employee development and training to foster a culture of excellence and guest service. According to a Deloitte study, 75% of employees consider professional development key to their engagement and loyalty to the company.
