There comes a point in one’s professional—and personal—life when we pause and ask ourselves: why do I do what I do? In the world of hospitality, where everything is measured in smiles, experiences and perceptions, that question becomes even more relevant. I have come to understand that the answer lies neither in financial indicators nor even in satisfaction surveys; it lies in the values that guide our decisions, in the consistency between what we say and what we do when no one is watching.
For years, I heard about “corporate values” in presentations and on lobby display boards. But over time, I discovered that most companies do not live their values; they merely declare them. They turn them into fine words rather than everyday habits. In hospitality, where hospitality is more often preached than practised, this can make the difference between an inspired team and one that is simply compliant.
