In the fast-paced world of hospitality, where every detail matters and every interaction creates a unique experience, commercial excellence has become an increasingly important priority.
My journey through the industry's dynamics has allowed me to observe firsthand how this concept goes beyond mere sales strategies, encompassing the comprehensive alignment of all revenue-generation drivers.
A Look at the Current Landscape
In the European context, the leadership in developing commercial strategies has been clear, but we cannot ignore the paradigm shift in North America. According to data from HSMAI, 34% of properties report leading in commercial effectiveness or being on their way there, while 39% report making some progress in this direction. The Strategy: Evolution or Revolution
My experience has borne out the insightful observation that commercial excellence is achieved in two ways: through evolution or revolution. Evolution is an incremental process, a plan for continuous year-on-year improvement. Transformation, on the other hand, entails change on a larger scale in strategies and/or capabilities.Trends Driving Change
A significant catalyst for this transformation has been the need to reduce management headcount, which has led to the consolidation of sales, marketing and revenue optimization disciplines under one umbrella. The evolution of leadership in revenue management has influenced sales strategies, while the traditional marketing team has shifted towards digital and e-commerce strategies, giving revenue management professionals a position of influence.Resistance and Challenges
However, not everyone welcomes these changes with open arms. Functional silos across sales, marketing and revenue optimization persist, sometimes even supported by contracts and agreements. Team reductions have created capacity challenges; there is simply not enough time to address the effectiveness of the commercial strategy while meeting the objectives of each department.Unification as the Key
Bringing teams together into a single system and generating the necessary reports are far from simple tasks. The convergence of sales, marketing and revenue teams involves changes to titles, hierarchies, strategies, processes and even meeting schedules. Cross-training becomes imperative. Management must commit to restructuring compensation and benefits, redesigning job descriptions, documenting new skills and specialisations, and changing reporting lines.
Leadership: The Key Piece
Change of this magnitude requires leadership that can envision and communicate how each individual can contribute more effectively. Team-management skills become essential as new teams form and move through the storming and norming stages. The Ultimate Payoff: Effectiveness, Efficiency and Agility
The ultimate reward of a strong commercial strategy is the creation of effectiveness, efficiency and agility across the system. It enables investment in innovative technology alongside the training needed to use it more fully. Investments in commercial effectiveness can generate significant returns. The call to action is clear for everyone in hospitality:- Develop Leadership Skills: The ability to facilitate change, including leadership and human resources skills, is crucial.
- Cross-Training: Sales, marketing and revenue optimization professionals must understand and value the skills of each discipline in order to drive the business forward.
