Whatever Happened to Hospitality as a Calling?

THE IDEA

How can hospitality professionals discover and nurture their vocation? A sense of calling can shape career choices. Explore whether vocation is innate or developed, and how managers can use it to better understand and motivate hotel employees—turning a job into a true calling.

Who remembers their first vocation? Did it match their last one? And their current job? Vocation is a very powerful force that leads us to make certain choices and can affect our professional future, for better or worse. But the truth is that it is not entirely clear what vocation actually is. Is vocation innate or developed? We all tend to think it is innate, but it would not be the first time that, through gaining a deeper understanding of another subject or profession, we have come to see it as our own calling. What 14-year-old thinks about studying economics or mathematics? Or civil engineering? Discovering one’s vocation means getting to know oneself, undertaking serious introspection. From there, perhaps we can see ourselves in a role or career that appeals to us. And in the workplace? Why not? Do you know your employee? Their concerns, their vocation? It is difficult to apply a vocation to a role that may be completely unrelated to it, but it will undoubtedly help you understand them better. Do not forget that your employee has a past, and perhaps where they are now is not where they would like to be. That does not matter: make them want to be there, fill the role with emotional rewards and help them discover that this could have been their vocation.
