Mentoring and executive coaching are standard elements of leadership development. But rather than seeking advice, what if employees facing challenges were asked to give it? Giving advice can be more motivating than receiving it, with practical implications for managers and team leaders.

In large companies, mentoring and executive coaching are already a standard part of leadership development programmes. Drawing on a mentor’s experience and advice is common practice, not only in the business world but also in many other areas of life.

But what if, when we seek advice, we are overlooking what we truly need? Psychologists have long known that people often struggle to address certain self-control issues, not necessarily because they do not know what they should do, but because they lack the motivation needed to turn that knowledge into action.
