Lead Hospitality

Social Media Marketing Beyond Business Hours

THE IDEA

Many hospitality businesses limit their social media activity to office hours, missing opportunities to engage guests when they are most available. Do we really know our customers?

When analysing the actions of many hotel companies, particularly on social media, I see one very widespread pattern:
  • LinkedIn articles, Monday to Friday, during business hours.
  • Facebook comments, Monday to Friday, during business hours.
  • Social media activity, Monday to Friday, during business hours.
It is curious to see how all activity disappears at 2:00 p.m., just as it does at 7:30 p.m. Of course, we all have commitments, but this inactivity represents a great opportunity for those who want to—and know how to—take advantage of it. The same happens at weekends, when, interestingly, customers have free time for this kind of interaction. If this is a Conversation, trying to fit the conversation around the timetable that is most convenient for us or best suits our habits and customs seems, I think, somewhat unfair to the customer we aspire to engage with. Of course, articles remain over time, as do Twitter updates and comments, but failing to take advantage of the Magic of the Internet and the Interactivity it provides means failing to make the most of the Internet—or perhaps not understanding it. If we are not ready for the conversation, at the right time and in the right place alongside our potential customers, they will probably choose to start a conversation with those who are willing to adapt to them. In the end, almost everything comes down to one simple question: “Do we know our customers?”
