The Sommelier Method for Hotel Reception: Refining Personalized Guest Service

THE IDEA

An innovative approach to welcoming hotel guests, inspired by the sommelier’s craft: sensitivity, active listening and personalization can help front desk teams create memorable guest experiences.

During one of my first training placements in California, I was fortunate enough to attend a wine tasting led by a sommelier who taught me a lesson that, without either of us knowing it, would shape my vision of hospitality forever. At the end of the session, a participant asked him how it was possible to remember so many nuances, origins, vintages, tannins and aromatic notes. With a smile, the sommelier replied: "It is not memory; it is trained sensitivity. It is not about knowing everything, but about listening to what each wine has to tell you."

Years later, in a hotel setting, I found myself repeating that same idea to a young front desk agent who was trying to memorise standard responses for every guest. "It is not about knowing everything," I told him, "but about knowing how to read the guest, just as a sommelier reads a glass of wine."
