Strategic Hotel Pricing: Setting the Right Rate for Your Value Proposition

THE IDEA

The right hotel rate does not come from the market alone; it comes from consistency. Demand should not dictate your pricing in isolation—the alignment between your identity, guest experience and value proposition should. When pricing becomes disconnected from positioning, hotels enter a dangerous cycle: discounts used to compensate for operational weaknesses, promotions used to make up for a lack of differentiation, and occupancy achieved at the expense of margin and brand equity. True strategic pricing does not ask what competitors charge; it asks whether your own rate makes sense. Defining the right price requires an uncomfortable but essential exercise: understanding what you promise, what you truly deliver and what guests perceive. Only when these three elements are aligned does the rate stop being a number and become a strategic statement. The right price is neither the highest nor the lowest—it is the one that protects your identity, supports profitability and reinforces the experience you want the market to remember.

It is not just demand. It is alignment between identity, experience and rate. Talking about price is still uncomfortable. Many reduce it to a technical variable, a dynamic table or an automatic response to occupancy. But price is not a number: it is a strategic statement.

I have seen hotels with an inspiring proposition undermine themselves with permanent discounts. I have also seen modest properties that, through consistency, maintain firm rates because their identity is clear and their experience is consistent. The market does not reward the cheapest; it rewards the most consistent. When pricing becomes disconnected from the value proposition, something dangerous happens: the guest perceives inconsistency. And in hospitality, inconsistency erodes faster than a bad review. No branding can withstand a poorly defended price.
