Valentine’s Day: Commercial Holiday or a Genuine Expression of Love?

THE IDEA

Valentine’s Day should be more than a commercial hook—it is the perfect opportunity to create memories that build guest loyalty. In my experience, what truly wins guests over is not chocolate-covered strawberries, but a personalised touch that makes every couple feel special. Like the time we left a poem from their wedding in the room; their tears of joy were worth more than any sale. Beyond 14 February, this date is a real test of hotel operations and service. Empowering teams, giving them the freedom to surprise guests, and teaching them to recognise the small signals guests share can turn a simple check-in into an unforgettable moment. Ultimately, the love we are looking for is not only between guests, but for them to fall in love with the hotel and return. A loyal guest does not just come back—they become the hotel’s best ambassador.

Every February, Valentine’s Day divides opinion. Some see it as a celebration of true love, while others view it as a masterstroke of consumerism. In hotels, the reality is that this day drives figures no manager should ignore. But beyond quick revenue, I have learned that Valentine’s Day is a strategic tool for strengthening guest relationships, driving loyalty and enhancing the perceived value of our brand.

In Spain, in February alone, hotels generate around €200 million in additional revenue thanks to this celebration, according to data from the National Federation of Hotel and Tourism Associations. But at this point, I always ask myself: is it just about selling more rooms, dinners and champagne, or can we do something that leaves a real impression on our guests?
