How Diversity Is Redefining Luxury in Hospitality

THE IDEA

Today’s hotel guests seek authentic, one-of-a-kind experiences rather than traditional ideas of luxury. Discover how personalised hospitality and an inclusive, diverse workforce can create better guest experiences.

The hotel industry is driven by the growing need to redefine the notion of luxury in order to cater to an increasingly diverse clientele. Gone are the days when enjoying a luxurious experience meant indulgent in-room candlelit dinners and a jacuzzi filled with rose petals. Today’s travellers seek authenticity and journeys filled with unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Let us not forget that it is the guest who defines the concept of luxury. Hoteliers often say they are guest-centric. However, it is important to go one step further by helping guests both when they are at the hotel and when they are not. What matters is understanding that guests are also loyal to other brands and businesses in other industries, and being able to work with them to make life easier for their most valuable customers. But above all, the first step in creating a memorable guest experience is knowing why they are staying at your property. You can truly define luxury by first engaging with them and discovering the real purpose of why they are there. Then, you can develop luxury throughout the stay, turning it into a more lasting memory. Hospitality is a unique industry that employs people from diverse backgrounds, representing a unique opportunity for hotel leaders. It is therefore essential to understand their workforce: to know how to lead and develop their talent, and how to leverage their knowledge and experience to better serve their guests and the company’s vision. Diversity is never enough; the key is to be diverse but also inclusive. Only by including everyone in the conversation can we bring out the best in our workforce. Hospitality often prides itself on being a melting pot of different cultures and backgrounds, but have we really been using this diversity to its full potential? It is worth considering.
