The Globalisation of Tourism

THE IDEA

Tourism is a global, ever-changing industry. Discover how Travel 2.0 is transforming the relationship between destinations and travellers. Join us in Argentina and Uruguay to discuss this exciting topic.

There is no doubt that tourism is a global phenomenon. Much has changed since the days of the exclusive Grand Tour to today’s mass tourism, and the passage of time has meant that what was once such an exclusive activity as travelling has now become almost a basic necessity. There is no country, region or destination that does not seek continuous improvement in order to attract its share of tourists. Each has its own particular characteristics, yet all share a number of common elements that require global solutions. Beyond climate change and its effects on tourism, there are certain factors more closely related to tourists’ mindset and behaviour that are bringing about a fundamental shift in the way destinations engage with them. They call it Tourism 2.0 or Travel 2.0, but above all it is a human and global change. Thomas Friedman once said in a book, speaking about globalisation, that the world is flat, and the changes brought about by Tourism 2.0 are a good example of this. These changes are reflected in every source market and have an impact on every destination market. Globalisation has become more evident thanks to the internet, and tourists have learned to make use of abundant, global information. Destinations, business owners and executives all need to update their skills, regardless of where they are from. We are aware of this, and also that the popular maxim still applies: think globally, act locally. That is why, after delivering courses and conferences in Barcelona and Madrid, we are crossing the Atlantic to Argentina and Uruguay. We sincerely believe that there is much work to be done and that tourism requires a global approach… applied to each specific destination. This week we will be in the Southern Cone speaking about what we are passionate about. We hope to see you there.
