Guests and Customers, Part Two

Following on from the previous article on guests and customers, I explore how hotels can identify and nurture high-value guest relationships. These are the guests who become loyal customers, drive sustainable revenue, recommend the hotel and support long-term growth. The difference between a one-off stay and a lasting relationship lies in the personalisation, recognition and human connection created in every interaction.

Every time I walk through the hotel doors, I see again those diverse faces that once made me realise that not everyone is the same from a business perspective. That first lesson, which I shared in a previous article, remains my starting point today. Distinguishing between guests and customers is not merely a semantic distinction, but a strategic decision that determines the direction and sustainability of any hotel establishment.
That initial reflection on the difference between an occasional guest and a customer who builds a relationship with our hotel not only changed the way I viewed bookings, but also transformed my approach to service, loyalty and business growth. What once seemed like a minor detail, I now know is the foundation on which the future of any hotel aspiring to do more than simply survive is built.
