A Story of Failure

Javier’s story shows how a lack of motivation and commitment can lead any hospitality professional towards failure. Talent can be developed, but without passion, discipline and personal accountability, performance eventually affects the team, guest service and one’s own career. The real failure is not losing a job, but failing to grow and add value in an industry where attitude matters.

It was an ordinary Monday when I met Javier. He had arrived at the hotel with the ambition of securing a role in operations. His CV contained no notable achievements, but plenty of buzzwords: “proactive”, “flexible”, “results-oriented”. None of this was reflected in the way he spoke or in his attitude. From day one, I understood that he was more concerned about clocking off than about the quality of his work.
At first, I thought he simply needed time. Sometimes, professionals take a while to find their rhythm. But in his case, there was neither rhythm nor willingness. His lack of motivation was evident: he avoided taking on new tasks, always looked for excuses and preferred to hide in the comfort of routine. When something went wrong, he blamed bad luck or external factors. He never looked in the mirror of personal responsibility.
