Are You Managing Your Hotel Staff Effectively?

THE IDEA

How do you build a strong company culture among your hotel employees? Do you see your team as an asset or simply a cost? Do you provide training, support and opportunities to grow? Consider these questions to assess your people management strategy.

Do you have a clear company culture that can be communicated easily? Do you convey your company culture to your employees? Do you see your employees as your greatest asset, or merely as an expense on the balance sheet? Do you share information with your employees that makes them feel involved in your business? Do you consider training an important part of your management approach? Do you make it easier for your employees to attend training courses and development programmes? Do you address employees by name? Do you care about their problems? Do you understand that your employees are not simply your employees, but people who work alongside you? Do you have a team spirit? Do you feel part of a team, or do you see yourself as king of the hill? Do you always side with the guest, or do you understand that sometimes the employee is right too? Do you correct your employees in public, or wait to do so in private? Have you provided channels for employees to communicate with you? Do you allow information to flow in all directions throughout your business? Do you work with your office door open? Do you congratulate your employees on their work during your daily walks around the hotel? Do you make daily rounds of the hotel to gauge the atmosphere among your employees? Do you consider some departments more important than others, and make this known? Do you consider some employees more important than others, and make this known? Do you facilitate occasional staff rotation so that everyone understands the importance of other roles? Do you use emotional rewards to motivate your employees? Do you seek to build strong, long-standing teams, or is high staff turnover your management approach? Do you clearly define job roles and the employee profiles required to fill them? Do you carry out a thorough, structured recruitment process? Ask yourself these questions (there are many more), and if the answers are not satisfactory, consider changing your strategy.
