Hospitality leadership is changing. Today’s professionals look for managers who listen, inspire and trust their teams. Authority no longer comes from job titles, but from leading by example. In this new era, hotel managers must balance high standards with empathy to build engaged teams and create happier guest experiences.

I have always believed that a hotel’s success does not begin at reception or in its most luxurious room, but in the way its team is led. In my early years in the industry, I used to believe that authority was a matter of hierarchy. Today, I know that true authority comes from leading by example, consistency and the ability to inspire trust.
I have seen young people newly arrived in hospitality who, within weeks, integrate with energy, learn quickly and contribute valuable ideas. And I have seen others, equally well prepared, become lost amid conflicting instructions, absent leaders or cultures that reward control more than collaboration. The difference, almost always, lies in the type of leadership they encounter.
