Overcoming Employee Resistance to Training in Hotels

THE IDEA

Overcoming resistance to training in the hotel industry requires a holistic approach. Understand its causes, communicate clearly, embed learning into the culture and use technology effectively. The key lies in participative leadership, personalised learning, feedback and ongoing measurement.

I have always observed a constant challenge: overcoming staff resistance to training. This resistance is a common obstacle in our industry, where traditions are deeply rooted and innovation is sometimes viewed with suspicion. Overcoming resistance to training requires a holistic approach that integrates empathy, effective communication, a culture of learning, personalisation, technology, recognition and ongoing measurement. As hospitality leaders, our role is to guide our team through these changes, not only for the benefit of the hotel, but also for their personal and professional growth.

Understanding Resistance: A Crucial First Step

First, understand the source of the resistance. It often stems from fear of the unknown or discomfort with change. I have learned that listening to and validating these concerns is essential. Empathy is a cornerstone of our industry, not only with guests, but also with our team.

Effective Communication: The Key to Change

Transparency in communication is vital. Clearly explain why training is necessary and how it will benefit not only the hotel, but also their personal and professional development. On one occasion, I introduced "Coffee with the Manager" sessions, where we openly discussed team concerns. This close connection demystifies the change process.

Integrating Training into the Hotel Culture

Training should not be an event, but an integral part of the hotel culture. Foster an environment of continuous learning. One strategy I have used is gamification, where employees earn badges or recognition for completing training modules. This adds an element of fun and healthy competition.

Participative Leadership: Leading by Example

As leaders, we must lead by example. Taking part in training sessions alongside the team not only demonstrates commitment, but also provides a valuable opportunity for personal development. In my experience, this has significantly increased team participation.

Personalising Training: Recognising the Team’s Individuality

Every team member has different learning styles and motivations. Offering training options that adapt to these differences is crucial. I implemented a modular training system in which employees could choose the courses that interested them most or aligned with their career aspirations.

Using Technology to Our Advantage

Technology is a powerful tool. Online learning platforms and virtual simulations can make training more accessible and engaging. During the pandemic, this was particularly helpful in maintaining team development despite social distancing.

Continuous Feedback and Recognition

Recognition and feedback are essential. Celebrating training achievements and progress motivates the team. One successful strategy was creating a "Wall of Fame" on our intranet, where we highlighted the team’s training achievements.

Measuring Results and Making Ongoing Adjustments

Finally, measure the impact of training. Surveys and performance metrics can help refine and improve programmes. Remember, training is a dynamic process that must evolve with the needs of the team and the market.
