Beyond Emotions: Why Perspective Matters in Hotel Staff Management

Albert BarraAugust 14, 2024 · 3 min read
In hotel management, difficult decisions such as employee dismissals can test a leader’s ability to separate personal emotions from business needs. While workplace relationships are natural, staffing decisions must remain aligned with the hotel’s strategic objectives. This article explores how to balance empathy and professionalism while protecting operational performance, team wellbeing and the property’s long-term success.

It is natural that, in the workplace, we develop stronger affinities with some colleagues than with others. We are human beings, and it is part of our nature to empathise and form emotional bonds with those with whom we share so many hours and experiences. However, in the field of hotel management, where decisions affect not only the team but also the perception and operation of the property, it is crucial that we know how to separate our personal emotions from the business decisions that need to be made.
When one of those colleagues with whom we have developed an affinity leaves the company, whether by their own choice or through dismissal, it is easy to make value judgements. Sometimes, criticism of the departure process is unavoidable and may even be directed at the manager, without considering the context or the reasons behind the decision. At such times, it is vital to remember that our objective as managers is to meet the hotel's defined objectives, which are neither arbitrary nor personal, but aligned with the interests of ownership and the business as a whole.
This focus on the hotel's mission and objectives helps us maintain the right perspective. Staffing decisions, although difficult, must be geared towards safeguarding the operational health of the property, the overall wellbeing of the team and the quality of service we offer our guests. This is not about being insensitive, but about strategic alignment with the long-term vision of the business.

The Importance of Perspective
- Emotional Separation and Professionalism: It is essential that, as managers, we can distinguish between our personal relationships and the needs of the business. This does not mean being cold or distant, but rather recognising that our decisions must be based on operational efficiency and the strategic interests of the hotel.
- Objective Performance Assessment: Staffing decisions must be based on objective criteria such as performance, contribution to the team and alignment with the hotel's objectives. This ensures that the process is fair and focused on what is best for the business as a whole.
- Clear and Transparent Communication: When a difficult decision is made, such as a dismissal, it is crucial that communication is clear and transparent, both with the person affected and with the rest of the team. Explaining the reasons and how they align with the hotel's objectives can help mitigate emotional reactions and foster an atmosphere of understanding.
- Maintaining Focus on the Hotel's Objectives: It is easy to be swayed by emotions in difficult moments, but we must always remember that our priority is to meet the objectives set by the hotel's ownership. This focus ensures that the decisions made, however difficult, are the right ones for the future of the property.
- Long-Term Impact on Team Culture: Staffing decisions not only affect the person leaving the company, but also send a message to the rest of the team. This is why they must be made with care and consideration, ensuring that they reinforce the values and culture we want to cultivate in our hotel.
