Why Vision Is Essential to Leadership Development

THE IDEA

A clear, shared vision is the starting point for effective leadership, lasting change and sustainable growth. It aligns strategic and operational plans, strengthens team commitment, creates unity and gives people a stronger sense of purpose. Without vision, organisations face obstacles and leaders can lose sight of the greater goal.

December and January are the months when we find ourselves preparing for change, both personally and professionally, based on our vision for the year ahead. Personally, I have never been one to declare or think about resolutions for the year that is beginning. Mainly because resolutions are generally things that remain only in our thoughts and rarely come to fruition, as they do not represent a guaranteed plan for lasting change. But what I really wanted to write about was the vision of each of our leadership capabilities, and the need to align that vision with the objectives we set before us in the short term.

Vision is the starting point of leadership.

The starting point everyone should undertake in developing vision is the desire to build a sustainable foundation from which to grow, rather than simply making a living to survive.

Vision determines direction.

Once the vision becomes more explicit and concrete, other things begin to flow from it: a new strategic plan, a new annual operating plan and a change plan for the transition, all with the vision clearly and strongly identified and thoroughly shared with the team being managed.

Vision must be of service.

A compelling vision gives the team something to focus on, rally around and reinforce their value and contribution to the organisation. This sustains and, in many cases, increases their commitment to the organisation.

Vision overcomes the power of criticism.

Who are the "squeaky wheels"? The constant complainers, the critics, the naysayers, and all those for whom any change is something to be attacked or stopped. Too often, they carry the day or, at best, delay the entire process of change.

Vision creates unity.

With a defining vision, staff should demonstrate a greater sense of purpose, belonging, unity and direction . . . as well as a genuine sense of enthusiasm about the prospects the future offers. The reality is that fewer than 10% of companies are led by managers who have a clear idea of where they are trying to lead people. ( according to the book by Ken Blanchard and Jesse Lyn Stoner, entitled Full Steam Ahead: Unleash the Power of Vision in Your Work and Your Life).
