For years, we took it for granted that moving up was the natural goal of any professional. In hospitality, promotion also came laden with symbolism: more responsibility, more status, more recognition. It was almost a rite of passage. Anyone who did not aspire to “be the boss” seemed not to understand the game.

Today, I increasingly encounter brilliant, committed professionals with sound judgement and a service mindset… who do not want to step into management positions. Not because they lack ambition, but because they see things too clearly.
