What Makes a Hotel Seem Expensive?

THE IDEA

In hospitality, “expensive” is often as subjective as each guest’s individual preferences. Yet behind that simple label lies a complex set of factors shaping how guests perceive hotel pricing. From location and amenities to service standards and brand reputation, every detail contributes to whether a hotel is seen as expensive or affordable. For hospitality leaders, the challenge is to show that value extends beyond the room rate and help guests understand what a quality hotel experience truly entails.

I recently had a chance encounter in which someone, without even knowing our hotel, made a statement that echoed in my ears for days: "Wow, this hotel is incredibly expensive!". What hurt me most was not the statement itself, but the fact that it was made out of ignorance of the value proposition we offer and the factors that lead us to set our rates. Those words, though spontaneous, left a deep impression on me. How is it possible to judge something as complex as the price of a hotel experience so lightly? This incident not only prompted me to reflect on the perception of value in our industry, but also on the importance of educating our potential guests about what quality in hospitality truly entails.

The superficiality of first impressions

It is natural for people to form opinions based on what they see or hear at a superficial level. However, in the world of hospitality, where every detail is carefully designed to deliver a unique experience, first impressions can be misleading. The perception of a hotel's price is influenced by a range of factors, from its location and amenities to the brand's reputation. Ignoring these elements can lead to an inaccurate assessment of what a property truly offers. From my experience, I have learned that a hotel's true quality goes beyond the tangible. Excellence in hospitality is built on invisible pillars such as attention to detail, personalised service and a passion for exceeding guests' expectations. Although these aspects may not be evident at first glance, they are what truly make the difference between an ordinary and an extraordinary experience. As a professional, I feel a responsibility to educate our potential guests about what the price of a stay truly entails. More than a simple commercial transaction, staying at a quality hotel is an investment in unforgettable experiences, in moments that remain in the memory long after the journey has ended. It is necessary to convey this message clearly and persuasively, highlighting the aspects that make our hotel unique and valuable. In a world where information is available at the click of a button, it is easy to be swayed by appearances and superficial opinions. However, as hospitality professionals, we must look beyond first impressions and educate our guests about the true value of a quality experience. At the end of the day, what truly matters is not the price paid, but the satisfaction and delight experienced during the stay.
"True value is not measured by price, but by the quality of the experience delivered".
This is a mantra that guides my approach as a leader in the hotel industry. By raising awareness of what excellence in hospitality truly entails, we can transform superficial perceptions into deeper, more meaningful appreciation. Although the initial comment may not reflect the profile of our hotel's usual guest, it is an opportunity to reflect on how we communicate and convey the value of our offering to all our potential guests.
