When Ego Becomes the Biggest Barrier in Hotel Management

THE IDEA

Hotel management demands a broad range of skills. Recognising your limitations and seeking support are essential to long-term success and continuous improvement.

Hotel management is a complex and challenging undertaking that requires a wide range of skills and knowledge. It is easy to lose perspective in the day-to-day and focus only on what is urgent, forgetting what matters in the long term. In addition, hotel management requires expertise across multiple disciplines, including marketing, finance, people management and daily operations, among others, while feeling the pressure to keep generating bookings. It is important to recognise that no hotel manager or owner can master all these disciplines alone. We need to accept that, at times, help is needed to achieve a hotel’s goals. One of the keys to success in hotel management is recognising our gaps and weaknesses and seeking help to overcome them, just as we do for our business. Ego is one of the greatest obstacles to continuous improvement in hotel management. Many hotel managers and owners feel compelled to show their teams and the outside world that they are the best at all times, even when they lack experience in a particular area. Rather than acknowledging their limitations and asking for help, they try to solve problems on their own, which can lead to poor decisions and failure. I can say that I greatly value it when someone has the humility and honesty to acknowledge that they need help with certain aspects of their business. This demonstrates strong leadership skills and a proactive mindset focused on improving and moving forward. There is nothing wrong with asking for help; in fact, it is a sign of business maturity. Recognising our limitations and seeking help to overcome them is key to achieving success in hotel management. By accepting them and working together with a strong team, we can achieve a hotel’s objectives effectively and sustainably.
