Hotel Value Proposition (3): The Importance of Innovation and Adaptability

THE IDEA

This article explores why innovation and adaptability are essential to a hotel’s value proposition, with effective examples from the sector. It examines strategies including active guest listening, market analysis and experimentation, as well as cases such as Marriott International and citizenM, recognised for personalising the guest experience and combining design with technology.

I continue with the series of Articles on The Value Proposition of Hotels (1) and (2), and, as on so many occasions, we underestimate the importance of having a value proposition as a key element for differentiating from the competition and attracting guests. However, having a good value proposition is not enough; it is also essential to innovate and adapt to emerging trends and guests’ changing needs in order to remain relevant and competitive in the market. In this article, we will explore the importance of innovation and adaptation in a hotel’s value proposition, and look at some examples of how certain hotels are doing this effectively.

What do innovation and adaptation involve in a hotel’s value proposition?

Innovation and adaptation are two key elements of a hotel’s value proposition. Innovation involves creating new ideas and solutions that add value for guests, while adaptation is the ability to adjust the hotel’s offering to meet the changing needs of guests and the market. Innovation is a key element in developing and evolving a hotel’s value proposition. It is necessary to remain constantly aware of market trends and guest needs in order to adapt and offer innovative solutions that appeal to them. Change management is also essential in this process. It is necessary to be agile and willing to adapt to changes in the business environment and in guest preferences, especially at hotels undergoing repositioning processes. This means being open to experimentation, failure and continuous learning. Some strategies for fostering innovation and the changes it entails in a hotel’s value proposition are:

Active guest listening: It is essential to take guests’ opinions and needs into account in order to adapt to them and offer innovative solutions that meet their demands.

Market and competitor analysis: It is important to stay abreast of market trends and developments and analyse competitors’ strategies in order to adapt and differentiate from them.
