Leading with Style (and Sarcasm): The Many Types of Hotel General Managers

THE IDEA

Hotel management is full of different leadership styles, from immovable traditionalists to technology enthusiasts. Explore the most common hotel general manager stereotypes—and the valuable lessons they offer—in this light-hearted article.

In this controlled chaos we call hotel management, where I have spent more years than I care to admit, I have identified an ironic yet perceptive menagerie among the hotel general managers I have encountered throughout my career. So, without further ado, here we go.

1. The Unwavering Traditionalist

First, we have our beloved Unwavering Traditionalist. If hospitality were a museum, he would be the centrepiece. This general manager firmly believes that any change is a threat to civilisation as we know it.

2. The Tech Addict

Then we have the Tech Addict. If something is not automated, it is not worth the effort. This general manager would replace staff with robots if he could, although sometimes I suspect he is an advanced android himself.

3. The Visionary from Another Planet

Ah, the Visionary from Another Planet, always brimming with ideas so futuristic that you wonder whether he lives in an alternative reality. If it were up to him, guests would arrive by spaceship.

4. The Marketing Obsessive

The Marketing Obsessive is the one who would spend the entire budget on Instagram campaigns. To him, one 'like' is worth more than a thousand bookings.

5. The Motivational Messiah

The Motivational Messiah is the general manager who sees himself more as a coach than a manager. His inspirational speeches are worthy of a Hollywood film, although he sometimes forgets that he runs a hotel, not a self-help seminar.

6. The Financial Guru

The Financial Guru can slash budgets as though they were paper. His motto is “save even on sunlight”, although under his command, profits are as elusive as comfort.

7. The Operations Obsessive

Enter the Operations Obsessive, with such a keen eye for detail that he can spot a misplaced pillow from miles away. That said, do not ask him about anything that is not on his checklist.

8. The Community Ambassador

The Community Ambassador is so involved in the local community that he sometimes forgets he has a hotel to manage. Excellent for public relations, though somewhat distracted when it comes to everything else.

9. The Extreme Environmentalist

The Extreme Environmentalist will make you feel guilty for every towel you wash. His hotel is greener than a salad, but sometimes you wonder whether the showers still have water.

10. The Cultural Chameleon

Finally, the Cultural Chameleon adapts to every guest, regardless of where they come from. So versatile that you wonder whether he has a personality of his own or is simply a reflection of his guests.

Lessons (With a Touch of Humour)

From each of these stereotypes, we can draw a valuable lesson (and yes, a little humour). The key lies in finding balance, never allowing a single approach to dominate completely. After all, hotel management is a diverse and dynamic art. Being a hotel general manager is, in essence, like conducting a very peculiar orchestra. Each style has its own melody and rhythm, but at the end of the day, we are all seeking perfect harmony in the delivery of exceptional service.
