Lead Hospitality

Gaspar de Portolá and the Art of Leading Through Uncertainty

THE IDEA

Gaspar de Portolá’s California expedition offers a powerful lesson in leadership, adaptability and long-term vision. His journey shows that whether exploring unfamiliar territory or managing a hotel, plans can change—but the ability to respond to the unexpected is what defines success. From building trusted alliances to guiding teams through crisis, Portolá’s story reminds hospitality leaders that resilience, strategic awareness and perseverance are essential in uncertain times.

California was not only where I trained and took my first steps in hotel management; during the many years I lived there, it was also where I discovered many of the stories that shaped this land. Among them was that of Gaspar de Portolá, a name that, for many, goes unnoticed in accounts of Spanish exploration in the Americas. Yet, as I delved into his story, I found in him more than just an explorer: a resilient leader, a man who confronted the unknown and who, like me, shared Catalan roots.

Portolá arrived in California with the mission of claiming these lands for Spain, but his expedition ultimately became a lesson in leadership, adaptability and perseverance. His story, though little known beyond historical circles, embodies the essence of what it means to face challenges in uncertain terrain—something that, in many ways, also defines the path of those of us who venture into the world of hospitality. Today, I want to share what his journey teaches us about leadership and management in times of uncertainty.
